Opinions: They’re Just That

I think the world would be a very boring place if we all had the same ideas and opinions, and I’m happy for people to voice whatever they want to, to whoever they want to. At the same time, I’ve noticed common beliefs popping up in blogger chats that really baffle me, especially as they are normally said in a way that suggests anyone who does this is breaking the law. What law, I don’t know, but I thought I’d share my opinions on things I have seen crop up time and time again.

Makeup wipes are, quite literally, the devil in beauty form and using one will make your skin fall off. Or something similar

While I get makeup wipes aren’t as thorough as cleansing and toning, I really don’t see the problem with them as part of a routine. While I don’t use them everyday (aka I only use them when to drunk to embark on a full cleansing routine), I don’t think it’s fair to judge people who choose to. I feel like, somewhere along the lines someone said they didn’t work out for them and then a big blogger game of Chinese whispers occurred and now anyone who uses them are susceptible to slagging off. Erm, no.

Scheduling posts takes the passion out of writing

As someone who has blogged whilst being a third year university student, and now someone in a full time job, I can tell you that if I didn’t schedule posts, I would probably never blog. Because I sure as hell am not inspired to write after an eight hour shift, gym session and shower. I write when I want to write, and schedule it for times when I know I won’t want to, meaning each of my posts are written when I feel passionate about writing at that time. Scheduling allows me to post my best content regularly, rather than forcing me to rush posts when I don’t want to. If you don’t schedule posts, congratulations. That works for you, this works for me and a whole lot of people so just leave us be.

You should only care about your content, caring about stats means you’re in it for the wrong reasons

Well isn’t this a judgemental statement! Obviously when you blog, caring about your content is important. It’s the back bone of your blog, and something you should be proud of. I think if someone cares about their stats, it shows that their blog is something that they are proud of. Stats are not the be all and end all, but I think anyone who says they are not bothered about people visiting their blog is probably telling porkies. Even if you really do only care about the content, it’s not right for you to judge other people who care about other things!

You need to know your niche

When people ask me what kind of blog I write, I’m all like err well I just write what I fancy so it’s a bit of everything. It’s great that some bloggers can focus purely on one thing, be it beauty, fashion, food… But that doesn’t mean you have to know your ‘niche’ and stick to it rigidly. Your blog should be a place where you can write freely, and not be constrained by guides that you think people want to read. If you have a niche and you’re happy with it, good on you, but if you don’t, who cares? People will read your blog because they like you as a writer, I’m sure they won’t freak out if you write about cake one day instead of mascara.

Like I said at the beginning, I’m not bothered about people having their own opinions. It’s a natural part of being a human and I love a good debate, so differences in ideas are actually interesting to me. What I don’t like is that people who think their opinions are superior to others, and throw their opinions down others throats (or twitter feeds) and god help if anyone disagrees.

What do you think?
