I feel like I have completed many of life’s adult check points.
- Finished university? Check
- Been in a long term relationship? Check
- Broken up from a long term relationship? Check
- Bought a house? Check
- Worked in an adult 9 – 5 job? Check
- Successfully food shopped (aka not just noodles and chocolate)? Check
Technically, I should be an adult.
But I am definitely not. It’s almost a daily occurrence that I wonder how I have managed to convince the world I am mature and grown up.
I mean, it’s cool guys, like I said here; I don’t *need* to be an adult until I’m 30. And there are some things I do that could be classed as adult. But there are probably more things I do that make people (mostly my friends) go, wow – you really should not be left alone.
I thought I’d share some of these things with you in case you also worry that you’re not as adult as you should be.
- Booked train tickets on the wrong date (okay, this happens every time I book ANYTHING and I don’t know if I’ll ever grow out of it)
- Forgot the gas guys were coming round and had to host in a baby pink, fluffy onesie complete with rabbit ears and tail
- Tried to let myself in the wrong house after a night out
- Hitchhiked home because my Uber’s kept cancelling, and then left my purse in his car (he dropped it round the next day, what a babe)
- Went out in public with a clothes tag hanging out because I couldn’t find scissors to cut it out and forgot about it
- Left my coat (complete with keys, bank card and phone) in a bar and didn’t realise until the next day as I stayed at my friends. Luckily another friend picked it up for me!
- Ordered cookie dough and ice cream at 10pm because I fancied it and didn’t want to leave the house
- Gone to the shop in a onesie and last night’s makeup
- Woken up in last night’s makeup multiple times
- Chosen to go out for food and/ or drinks instead of do a food shop (and lived off omelettes until payday)
- Dropped (and broke) my brand new phone the same day the case arrived
These are just the cherry’s on a big ol’ iced cake. And, all of these have happened in the last month. I’m too busy having fun and being carefree to really hitch up all my responsibilities, and while it may not be a sustainable way to live forever, for now it’s exactly what I need.
I like to coin the term ‘baby adult’, or ‘adult in training’. All the mishaps and set backs, while they shouldn’t be happening SURE, are surely teaching me important adult skills? You know, like laughing at yourself, and thinking on your feet, and dealing with the unexpected…
Bottom line is, it’s okay if you’re not as adult and responsible as you envisioned, whatever age you are. My 17 year old sister is often like, India I dunno what I want to do with my life???? And I’m like lol babe join the club and expect to be there for a long time.
I mean, if you do have your life and adultness sorted, that is great! But if you don’t? Enjoy the ride chick.
