Juicing It

Green juices and smoothies are having a moment in the fitness world right now, despite the fact they look pretty gross. (I mean, let’s be real). I’ve wanted to try some for ages but a) my blender is completely shite* b) juice fasts/ premade juices cost so much! So when Joe Blogs (the daddy of blogger events) asked if I wanted to go to #CurrysIntrojuicing to learn about the health benefits of juicing, I was super excited.

*I bought a Breville Active Blender yesterday!!

The event was held in Lambert’s Yard in Leeds, a quirky little bar which had plenty of space for the five stations, and after being greeted we were put into five groups and sent off to learn about the world of juicing. First up for my group was Rocket Yoga, run by Amanda from Yoga Elementz who had the best abs ever. Prior to this, I’d only ever tried a few yoga sessions from Youtube and honestly I found them boring. Good for stretching but slow paced and kind of pointless, so I didn’t have high hopes for this session. How wrong I was though, turns out rocket yoga is much more fast paced and intense, without being sweaty and gross. It was fun actually, and we ended the session with some relaxation that nearly put me to sleep!

After discovering how unflexible I really am, we headed to the Juice Station where we got to practise making different juices. There was a massive selection of fruit and veg to use, although I steered towards to sweeter fruits and vegetables so it would taste nicer. I learnt the hard way that too much lime in a juice is not nice, and I also spilt a lot of beetroot coloured juice all over the table. Luckily Dei followed suit pretty quickly and the heat was taken off me! The juicers we used were insane, you just popped in whatever you wanted, skin and all, and it separated the juice. I was genuinely amazed!

Next up was the soup session, where we had soup (duh) and some strange healthy breads. Rye and corn bread, I believe. They were no crusty white baguette but I’d definitely consider buying rye bread for my home! We got to try making mocktails, which in all honesty wasn’t that much different from the juicing session except we had a bar man who was quite nice to look at while juices were made!

The last station had Shakela from Nutrishan talk over different supplements to use in juicing for energy, and the benefits of adding in unconventional ingredients like avocado oil to make juices more filling. We also tried a few of her juicing recipes, and she showed us how simply adding in something like a little pineapple can make a different to the taste if it is too bitter or icky.

I really enjoyed the whole day, especially the yoga session which I was dreading the most! I definitely think juicing is a good way of adding nutrients into your diet, but the amount of fruit and vegetables you need for one juice is a lot so it must get quite expensive! I also personally think smoothies are much more filling than juices, so how people do juice fasts is beyond me! Now I’ve got my Active Blender, I’ll be making a lot more smoothies but taking a leaf from the CurrysIntrojuicing event and making sure I add some vegetables to get more goodness from it.
