Everyone seems to be getting fed up of body shaming, and it’s not hard to see why. In one magazine, someone can be called “too fat” for putting on say, 1lb, and in a different magazine the exact same photo can be labelled “too skinny”. Really, magazines should be dedicating articles to why they are so obsessed with putting people down.
Penny from Lillies and Love has started a #bodyUNashamed project, which is sort of like a battle against the crap we have to put up with on a daily basis that is designed to make us feel bad about ourselves, by saying three things we think are great about another blogger, and then three things about ourselves. I’ve been put with Naomi from Bewitchery, whose blog I hadn’t come across before #bodyUNashamed.
1. First off, I love your style. It’s pretty unique and vampy, and it’s obvious how at ease you feel with yourself. Plus you look effortlessly cool dressed all in black. I’ve tried black on black outfits before and look like a bit of a tit, so I’m really envious how you pull it off so well!
2. You have a gorgeous figure, slim with the perfect curves. Which isn’t surprising as you clearly love healthy food, but also treat yourself when you want something!
3. You’re so positive! It’s pretty easy to see that you can see the positives in things, which is such a good trait to have and one I wish I had naturally.
Finding three things about Naomi was easy, as she’s gorgeous and not afraid to dress to her body and style. It’s a little bit harder finding things about myself, I’ll be honest. I’ve been feeling really crappy about myself lately, and even though I know I’m no fatter/ uglier/ whatever than I was before I was feeling rubbish, but there is no reasoning the demons in your head sometimes. Which I guess is why it is so important to take part in projects like this!
1. I like my height. I’m between 5’6 and 5’7, which means I’m taller than a lot of girls but shorter than most guys. I can wear heels without feeling like a giant, but can get away with wearing flats when I’m not in the mood for my feet to ache. It’s pretty much the best of both worlds.
2. I love my nails. I bit them up until I was 16, but I’ve grown and cared for them now so they’re really strong and have a naturally good shape, and I buff and pamper them regularly enough that people point out they look as if I’ve had gel nails.
3. I like my sense of humour. I’m quite witty and sarcastic, but I also love to mess around and have fun. I also tell the best (aka worst) dad jokes.
I’d love to live in a world where we weren’t judged on our appearance. Or even better, judged at all. Beauty is artificial, it’s created by culture and people. It’s not right that a living person with feelings is given a label that only has meaning because we’ve given it that meaning. We all have this idea of what perfect looks like, but no one is perfect is the same and you can’t change who you are so let’s just be happy, let others be happy and not care anymore.
