Why I’m Obsessed With Coconut Oil

I can’t remember when my love for coconut oil first began, but I’ve been obsessed with it for at least three years. I swear by it for saving my bleached and broken hair a few years ago, and since then I’ve used it for all sorts of things. I volunteered in India last year for a few weeks and when I was there I convinced all thirteen other volunteers to buy some as I raved on about it so much! It is only about 70p for 250ml of coconut oil over there though, which is insane!

I feel like I’m some kind of copy cat posting about coconut oil, as it’s been hitting the blogger scene fast and hard lately but honestly, I FOUND IT FIRST. Probably.

Please ignore how gross my tub looks. My coconut oil I keep for beauty has had it’s label picked off (I admit, that was me) and this is my food coconut oil which I keep my the hobs in the kitchen. It gets SO hot in my kitchen, even without any appliances or heating on, that my coconut oil is constantly liquid. And I am constantly in a state of sweat.

Coconut oil edit

There are literally hundreds of ways you can use coconut oil for beauty but I tend to stick to these four.

Hair treatment

While all oil is good for your hair due to the fatty acids, coconut oils molecular chain is more easily absorbed into the hair shaft due to its shape, so it nourishes hair from the inside as well as the outside. Regular coconut oil treatments honestly saved my hair when it was so damaged the ends were snapping off daily, and now doing weekly treatments helps to keep my hair in top condition and counteract any environmental and heat damage. When doing hair treatments, I just melt the oil in my hands and massage it into my hair from the roots to the ends; I try to leave it on overnight but I’ll always leave it at least an hour! I used to avoid leaving the treatment on my roots but actually, coconut oil is antibacterial and antifungal so is really good for your scalp. I do have to shampoo twice after a treatment to ensure there’s no oil left in my hair!

Eyelash and eyebrow serum

I got into the habit of picking my mascara off for a while and it really wrecked my eyelashes. I already knew how amazing coconut oil was for my hair, so decided to try it on my lashes every night. After a month I could already see my lashes were thicker and longer! The only problem is that it stings like a bitch if you put too much on and it drips into your eyes so use it sparingly! After having success with my eyelashes, I used nightly treatments on my eyebrows when I was growing them thicker and it definitely helped speed up the process.

Moisturiser

Whenever I’m going through a dry skin phase, I slap on a bit of coconut oil overnight instead of my usual moisturiser. Although it feels super greasy at first, it quickly absorbs and by the time I wake up my skin is soft and hydrated. I’ve heard that coconut oil can cause acne, but I’ve personally never found this. I even used it when I had acne and the antibacterial properties helped to calm down my spots! If you’re worried about it causing spots, you can always use it on your body and avoid your face :)

Nail and cuticle treatment

Nail strengtheners actually weaken your nails with repeated use so when my nails and cuticles are looking dry and brittle, I’ll massage coconut oil into my fingertips and then seal it in with a hand cream. The oil really softens my cuticles and means I can push them back and trim them, and regular uses keeps my fingernails strengthened.

I also have started cooking with coconut oil recently, you only need a tiny bit and it tastes a lot less oily than other oils. And not at all coconutty so don’t worry if you’re not a fan of coconut flavoured things (such as gross Bounty bars, eww). I bought a new coconut oil for cooking as I dip my fingers in my beauty coconut oil and it seemed a bit unhygienic. If you want to buy coconut oil, you NEED to get it from Dolphin Fitness. It’s an online health store but it has free delivery, the coconut oil is al organic and unrefined (the only kind you want on or in your body) and it’s up to half the price of other health stores like Holland and Barrett, and even Amazon!

Do you have any other uses for coconut oil?
