Bakers Days* / Mothers Day Cake
I think you’d be hard pushed to find someone who doesn’t like cake on special occasions, but if like me you’re a student, visiting home to bring cakes and presents for your family can be hard, what with the cost, part time jobs and plain old studying. I’ve seen quite a few cake by post twitter accounts, which is the cutest idea to let someone know you’re thinking of them when you can’t be there, so when Baker Days sent me this Mothers Day cake to try, I was beyond excited.
I wasn’t really sure what to expect from a posted cake, so was pleasantly surprised when this came through. Not only is the tin really cute, very Cath Kidston, it’s also reusable so if you have a friend who likes kitsch tins it would make a present as well as cake. It also included a cute card and some love heart sweets, which is a nice bonus!
Inside the tin is the most adorable sized cake ever. There are plenty of designs to choose from, from the more traditional iced cakes to the really sweet ones. I chose this design because the birds and flowers look hand drawn and adorable, but there are plenty of more grown up looking ones. You can also choose to personalise the messages, and as well as post box sized cakes, there are bigger sizes and options like cupcake packages. They also do celebrity cakes, including a Ryan Gosling cake!
I was really surprised by how fresh the cake smelled given that it was sent by post, but what Baker Days have done is put the icing over the entire cake and up to the edge of the plate it’s on, so that the sponge doesn’t get any air on it. I chose a chocolate sponge, but there are plain sponge and fruit cake versions, as well as dairy and gluten free versions.
The cake tasted really nice. It was moist, and considering how small it was it wasn’t at all dense. My experience of small cakes are just unrisen cakes normally! The cake itself had a rich, chocolate taste which wasn’t overly sweet, and then the icing was a nice sweet contrast. Because it’s small, you don’t get that food baby feeling either which is good.
I really love the concept of posted cake, especially when the taste doesn’t suffer. It’s perfect for students, the cake only costs £15 and it’s both a cute idea and a nice present- what is better than receiving cake along with bills and junk mail? It’s a nice size as well, enough for your average household to all have a slice, or for the recipient to eat it all and not feel too guilty about it… Kind of!
I’ve really enjoyed eating this, I suppose I should actually send one to my step mum for Mothers Day rather than having a Mothers Day cake to myself! I’m definitely impressed with Bakers Days, and I would buy a postable personalised birthday cake if I didn’t have the option to give them one in person. The only downside would not being able to have any yourself.
Have you tried a cake by post? Or would you consider getting them one?
